Importing OpenVPN Configs on iPhone and iPad

Introduction

iPhone and iPad use OpenVPN Connect from the App Store with VPN Safe .ovpn files. Mail or iCloud the file to the device, or download the zip on the iPad in Safari.

App Store: OpenVPN Connect
Zips: vpnsafe.net/downloads/openvpn-udp.zip / vpnsafe.net/downloads/openvpn-tcp.zip

Import

  1. Install OpenVPN Connect.
  2. On a computer, unzip the UDP pack and send one city file to the iPhone (AirDrop or Files).
  3. On the iPhone, tap the .ovpn > Share > OpenVPN.
  4. OpenVPN Connect opens with Add for that profile. Tap Add.
  5. Enter your VPN Safe username and password.
  6. Allow OpenVPN to add VPN configurations (passcode / Face ID).

Connect

  1. In OpenVPN Connect, toggle the profile on.
  2. The iOS VPN icon appears in the status bar.
  3. Check vpnsafe.net/whats-my-ip in Safari.

If the hotel Wi-Fi blocks UDP, import the same city from the TCP zip. Seamless Tunnel in OpenVPN Connect Settings is the iOS kill switch for this app. For WireGuard on iOS, use the official WireGuard app instead (see Using WireGuard on iOS).
